Gaining knowledge about labret piercing is crucial, before undergoing the procedure directly. Read ahead to know about various aspects related to this art, including the procedure involved and care to be taken after undergoing one.
Body art in the form of piercing and tattoos has gained huge popularity among the youth. You might come across different types of body piercings, including simple and extreme forms.
Labret refers to the one that is done at the lower portion of the bottom lip. With this facial art, it is not wrong to say that history repeats itself as a fashion trend.
In fact, labret was found to be a traditional piercing, worn by male members of the Aztecs and Mayans, as a means to signify their societal status. Being an invasive procedure, one should research about it before getting it done, so as to minimize risks and complications associated with it.

Details to Keep in Mind

Labret, or any other form of body piercing, should not be taken lightly. It is a painful procedure that involves puncturing the skin areas and inserting jewelry. So, getting aware about the procedure and aftercare tips is imperative for full recovery.
Labret is classified into different kinds, based on where it is located. Although the central one is most common, it can also be performed in an off-center position. The one that is done at the center of the lower lip in an upright manner is called vertical labret piercing.

Preparation

The first step is to search for a studio that you trust. Labret piercing is a relatively common type, which every artist is aware of. Feel free to discuss its placement with the artist.
Also, your lip thickness will be measured with a safe device. By doing so, the length and size of jewelry are determined for proper fitting. All fitting jewelry are not convenient to wear, and often cause skin irritations.

Jewelry

Before you directly go for the procedure, decide the jewelry, which you are going to adorn. The jewelry design is not an issue; you can select from hundreds of patterns like barbell, ring, stud, hook, etc. However, lay emphasis on the material; purchase only those that are not allergic to your skin, preferably one made up of gold, silver, or titanium.

Procedure

Once the placement area is decided, the artist will mark two small points: one on the exterior side (below the lip), and the second one, on the interior side of the lip. Following this, a clamp will be placed above the mark points, and piercing will be done with a needle.
Relax and breathe deeply; you can close your eyes during the procedure, otherwise seeing the needle itself may confuse you.

Aftercare

This includes regular inspection of the pierced site. Do not touch it, unless you are told to do so. Also, wash your hands before you clean the site with salt water. Avoid makeups, alcohol, and smoking as far as possible, so as to promote quick healing. With proper care, it heals in about 6 - 8 weeks.

Problems

Make sure that the jewelry is not irritating the gums and teeth; otherwise, it can lead to dental problems. Practice oral hygiene like regular mouth cleaning and flossing to avoid bad odors.
In case of any unusual swelling and inflammation, take advice from the piercer. These may be because of some infections. If required, the piercer will remove the jewelry till infected site is cured.
As far as charges are concerned, a single labret costs about USD 50 or more. After the procedure, proper healing without any complications should be your first priority.
To achieve this, you should follow the prescribed directions thoroughly. After it heals completely, you can replace your initial jewelry with a smaller one, which will reduce unnecessary rubbing with the gums.
